The use of the 96-well plate format for high-throughput solid-phase extraction has become widespread since their commercial introduction in the United States. Today, the market offers a wide selection of 96-well products and chemistries to laboratory scientists that satisfy a range of application needs. This "Sample Prep Perspective" column reviews the historical development of this plate format, describe the various product classifications, and discuss some of the newer sorbent chemistries and applications.

Solid-phase extraction has progressed from using individual columns and cartridges to high throughput 96-well plates. As a result of this transition, chemists must identify a new source of related products for sample preparation in this format, and these products often are made by unfamiliar manufacturers that sell outside the chromatography market. This “Sample Prep Perspectives” column provides information about the types of accessory products available to manually perform 96-well sample preparation and support the transition from single-column to high-throughput techniques.
